How to Hear the Holy Spirit in These Last Days
The Age of Many Voices
We are living in an era of noise — podcasts, prophets, influencers, and endless opinions about what God is saying. Yet, amidst all the chaos, the question remains: Can we still recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit?
Just like young Samuel in the temple, many believers today are surrounded by religion, activity, and routine, but few are truly listening. The Holy Spirit is still speaking, but discernment has become one of the rarest gifts in the modern church.
Hearing in the Night
Samuel didn’t recognize God’s voice at first — he confused it for Eli’s. This is where many believers are today.
We confuse the voice of God with:
Emotions
Personal ambition
Other people’s opinions
Or the loudness of culture
But Eli’s instruction to Samuel changed everything:
“Go and lie down, and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’”
True discernment begins when we stop running to others for interpretation and start posturing our hearts before the Lord to hear Him directly.
Discernment Requires Stillness
Eli told Samuel to lie down again.
In a generation addicted to movement, stillness has become a spiritual discipline.
If you want to discern the Holy Spirit, you must:
Turn down the volume of distraction.
Create sacred space for prayer and Scripture.
Let silence refine your hearing.
Discernment is not learned in crowds — it’s learned in quietness.
The Counterfeit Spirit in the Last Days
Jesus warned in Matthew 24:24 that “false prophets will appear and deceive many.”
This deception doesn’t always look demonic; sometimes it looks almost right.
That’s why discernment is not suspicion — it’s intimacy.
You recognize the false by being deeply familiar with the true.
The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Word of God, never glorifies man, and never stirs confusion.
If the message glorifies the messenger instead of the Messiah — it’s not the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual Fathers and Mothers Matter
Even though Eli’s eyesight had grown dim, he still helped Samuel recognize the voice of God.
This shows us that God often uses mentors, pastors, and spiritual parents to help train our ears for the supernatural.
A generation that rejects all authority will often struggle to recognize divine authority.
We need seasoned voices to help us discern — not to replace the Holy Spirit, but to confirm what He’s saying.
Saying “Speak, Lord” in a World That’s Speaking Too Much
In the end, the key wasn’t Samuel’s position — it was his posture.
When your heart says, “Speak, Lord,” you’re telling God:
“I value Your Word above mine. I trust Your leading above my understanding.”
And when that becomes your daily prayer, you’ll find that the Holy Spirit doesn’t just speak — He begins to walk with you.
